The Mojave Test Area of the Reaction Research Society, Inc. The Reaction Research Society owns a 40 acre site to the east of Koehn Dry Lake in the Mojave Desert. The facility is improved, having test stands and a control bunker, but is not cushy. Overnight accomodations are by tent and sleeping bag. From LA, take 405 North or 210 West to I5 North. Take I5 to Hwy 14 (North/East) toward Lancaster/Palmdale. Follow 14 through Lancaster/Palmdale and on to Mojave. Near the North edge of Mojave, 14 takes a right; follow it. Continue on 14 just under 20 miles. You will come upon the "Jawbone Canyon Store" on your left; it is the last store at which you may buy food. Avail yourself of it. About a half mile later is Rogers Rd. (19.7 miles out of Mojave). Turn right on it. If you get as far as the Redrock-Randsburg Road (to Johannesburg/Randsburg) you have gone about two miles too far. Take Rogers Rd. east 0.8 mile to Neuralia Rd. and turn right. Take Neuralia Rd. south 1.0 mile to Munsey Rd. and turn left. Take Munsey Rd. east 1.1 mile on pavement. Continue on dirt road 1.4 mile to Du Ravan Ranch and a stop sign. Continue on dirt road 5.9 mile, gradually turning northward. Take Downrange Rd. east 1.2 mile to MTA. Notes: Mileage figures are approximate. Most of the route may be found on a AAA Kern County map. First-timers should travel during daylight to avoid holes, ruts, etc. This is DESERT! - Bring plenty of food and water. - Bring appropriate clothing (see below). - Bring substantial shoes or boots. - Bring sunglasses, hat, sunblock. - Bring binoculars, cameras, video, etc. - Be aware of and respectful of snakes. - Be careful of desert tortises; they are a protected species. - Fill in any holes you dig. This is DESERT! In the winter it can be very cold; in the summer it is guaranteed to be hot. The heat is very dry and not too bothersome but you will get dehydrated if you are not careful about fluids intake. The melanin-challenged (essentially everyone) should wear sun BLOCK (at least SPF 15). I usually wear long pants to protect my legs, a white cotton shirt to reflect sun, a wide- brimmed hat, and sun glasses.
