Homework #1 - How do I get a copy?

  1) Look in 3559 (TA mailbox room) above my mailbox
for extra copies (until they run out).

  2) Use the Web (netscape is installed on SeasNet):
       ftp://ftp.cs.ucla.edu/pub/cs181/hw1.ps

  3) Use ftp - The full path is "ftp ftp.cs.ucla.edu"
       ftp cs
login as anonymous, give account as password
       cd /pub/cs181
       get hw1.ps

Oops. This was a bad question. Stayed up too late that night.

                    +
1) x should be in a
    i +
   y should be in b

2) length of x equals length of y for some k

Homework #5:

It will be graded on effort (not correctness), since solutions are easily
available, so give it your best shot. Shouldn't take more than 2-3 hours,
since your midterm will be less than 2 hours.

1) Homework #1 has been graded. They are in my mailbox.

2) Homeworks #2 & #3 will hopefully be graded by Wednesday.

3) No practice problems #4 were written. Due to the delay in getting a
grader, I am grading HW2 myself, so I have not had time to write
   some practice problems.

We did cover some problems in section. Please ask a friend for some
notes. I do not take notes of my own section.

If you would like more practice stuff, you can see me in office hours.

4) Office hours - THIS WEEK ONLY.

   Thurs 3:30-4:30
On Tues & Thurs I can not stay past 5pm, so if you would like more time,
   please schedule a time.

5) Example of common oversights (by 2 or 3 people):
Language L is FS, but you have a pumping lemma proof.

This excerpt is from a student.

   2 common mistakes:
     1) You can pick alpha, y, and i. (also x & z)
You can not pick u, v, and w.
				       i
     2) If the language is FS, then xuv wz MUST be in the language.
You may have to manipulate the string a bit.

I don't have my APS book, but I think PAL is defined over alphabet {a,b}.
If the alphabet is {a}, then PALa = a*.

What alphabet is the palindrome over?
The book said palindrome over infinite alphabet is not a language, so
shouldn't we define the alphabet first? For example, if the alphabet is
{a}, then it will be an FSL, won't it?

----------------------------------------
The language in question was : Odd PAL with only a's.

Let's look at the possible v's.
We must find a counterexample (some i>=1) for all possible v's.
					  ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Note: The i can be different for each v.

The given counter-example works when v's length is odd,
but not when v's length is even.

See Slide 3A-5.

Mitchell

P.S. Draw the DFSA for this language.
It has 4 states (n=4), and the loop is 2 states long (|v|=2).
      That's why we can't find a counterexample when v is even-length.

I got some stomach problems. Lost six pounds yesterday praying to
the porcelain god. :-) I think it was something I ate.

Chi's finished grading HW2, and it's in the mailbox.
